CITATION
A valiant officer of the Indian Army, Major Ashok Tara was a Company Commander of 14 Guard Regiment and took part in the crucial battles of Dholoi, Gangasagar, Brahmanbaria and Bhairab in 1971. He was leading his troops from the front and was awarded Vir Chakra for his gallant actions. Even after the surrender of Pakistan Army, the confined family members of Bangabandhu, including Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib were not released. Pakistani soldiers were firing all around and were aggressive in action. Major Ashok Tara, ignoring a risk to his life, forced the Pakistani soldiers to surrender weapons and took over the security of Bangabandhu's family. Later, Bangabandhu invited Major Ashok Tara to his residence and presented him gifts. For his great contribution, Col. (Retd) Ashok Tara Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.
