CITATION
During the Liberation War, the Nepali born Rifleman, Pati Ram Gurung, was a soldier of 5/1 Gorkha Rifles of Indian Army, attached to a medium machinegun detachment in the battle of Uthali in Chuadanga. On 30 November 1971, when enemy forces attacked his company, the young Gurung charged towards the enemy single-handed. Even after being mortally wounded, he continued the charge and silenced the enemy machinegun before he fell dead. The Indian Government posthumously honoured him with the Maha Vir Chakra for his sacrifice and supreme courage. For his great contribution, Shaheed Rifleman Pati Ram Gurung Maha Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).
