During the Liberation War, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mandal Padmashree was working in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. On receipt of information that few Bangalee employees in the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi were being brutally tortured by Pakistanis and were kept under confinement, with the assistance of some doctors. He managed to bring them for treatment to AIIMS after treatment, he secretly arranged for them to join the Liberation War. This incident was reported in the press and raised noise in the diplomatic circles. He also arranged for treatment of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani in AIIMS under his care. Moreover, many Bangladeshis were treated by him free of charge in New Delhi. He also visited the hospitals in West Bengal and provided medical treatment to the sick and wounded Freedom Fighters and refugees. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mandal Padmashree is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.
