CITATION
During the Liberation War, Lieutenant Colonel Kulwant Singh Pannu was the commanding officer of 2 Para Battalion of Indian Army. The battalion was para dropped near Tangail on 11 December 1971 behind the enemy lines. In a critical situation, he captured enemy positions and repulsed counter-attacks which changed the course of war. The advance of his battalion towards Dhaka created panic among Pakistan Army commanders and shattered their morale. For his gallant and inspiring leadership, he was awarded Maha Vir Chakra by the Indian Government. Later he was promoted to the rank of Major General. For his great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Lieutenant Colonel Kulwant Singh Pannu Maha Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour (Posthumous).
