During the Liberation War, Lars Leijonborg visited the liberated areas of Bangladesh and after witnessing the sufferings of the refugees he highlighted the issues in the Swedish media and made efforts to create public opinion in favour of Bangladesh. He appealed to the Swedish Government to stop aid to Pakistan. He repeatedly urged them to withdraw the Swedish Ambassador from Pakistan. For his strong support to the Liberation War, Lars Leijonborg is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.
