During the Liberation War, Captain M. N. R Samant played a key role in training the Bangladeshi naval commandoes and prepared them for operation. He took personal risks in coordinating and guiding the naval commandoes for dangerous missions in the occupied areas of Bangladesh. In recognition of his contribution, the Indian Government awarded him Maha Vir Chakra. For his remarkable support and contribution, Captain (Retd) M. N. R Samant Maha Vir Chakra is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.
