During the Liberation War, Shri Upen Tarafdar was the producer of the radio program 'Shangbad Bichitra’ in Akashbani Kolkata. This programme inspired Bangladeshis and there was a large audience of programme. Through this radio programme, Upen Tarafdar created public opinion in favour of the Liberation War. He recorded numerous accounts of atrocities from different areas of Bangladesh and broadcasted them. He covered the historic moments of Mujibnagar Government's oath taking ceremony, liberation of Jessore and surrender of Pakistan Army on 16 December, 1971. He vividly portrayed the incidents of the Liberation War in his book ‘Ekattorer Uttal Dinguli'. For his remarkable support and contribution, Shri Upen Tarafdar is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.
