Mary Frances Dunham, during her long stay in Bangladesh in the sixties, had developed a deep affection for the people and a keen interest in the culture of Bangladesh. During the Liberation War, as an active member of the Bangladesh Information Centre, she submitted many memos and letters to the decision-makers in the USA and circulated an open letter to Mrs. Richard M. Nixon on May 24, 1971 on the genocide being committed in Bangladesh. Her passion, understanding and first-hand experience on Bangladesh added new dimensions to the efforts of the Bangladesh Information Centre. She wrote an informative book titled 'Jari Gaan' based on Bengali culture and art. For her great contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Mary Frances Dunham is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.
