During the Liberation War, Janab Afzal Hossain conducted relief work in the refugee camps of Dauki, Balat, and Pamchutia with his own fund. He played a leading role as a member of Bangladesh Assistance Committee formed in Shillong. As a chairperson of the Dead Body Burial Committee of Shillong he buried Shaheed Freedom Fighters and refugees at his own cost. He and his brother Janab Ahammad Hossain are still maintaining the graves of the Freedom Fighters at the Moprem graveyard. Besides, he extended support and assistance to the wounded Freedom Fighters and refugees at different hospitals. For his great contribution towards the Liberation War, Janab Afzal Hossain is awarded Friends of Liberation War Honour.
